• What happens if my learner is not participating in our tutoring session?

  • Try taking a 5-minute break: bathroom break, color, do something "mindless."

  • Try figuring out a new form of teaching the material. Children love more hands-on learning than mere worksheets. 

• What do I do if my learner does not feel comfortable around me?

  • Try ice breakers to ease your way into a friendship.

  • Try finding similarities between you and the learner. ​

• What do I do if my learner is saying something inappropriate?

  • Redirect your learner to the task you have been working on together. ​

  • Reaffirm/ model appropriate language and behavior. 

• What if my learner brings nothing to our tutoring session?

  • Find resources that you know and/or use our list of resources to practice concepts that you have both been working on. ​

• What do I do if I don’t understand how to relay the content my learner is learning the way their teacher is doing it?

  • Ask them to teach you. A reversal of roles can be more beneficial to the learner. As they are teaching you, they are practicing and learning educational material. ​
